3 Steps to Protect Yourself Online
Sep 30, 2024The other day, I received a call from a local woman-owned business owner who was distraught after her social media profile was hacked. Unfortunately, there was no way to recover the profile, and she now has to start her business’ social media account from scratch, losing the entire community she’d worked so hard to build. Incidents like these, while unfortunate, serve as reminders of how vulnerable we can be online– and why it’s important to take precautions to protect ourselves.
Whether you're a small business owner or an individual trying to safeguard your online presence, here are 3 simple steps you can take today to protect yourself from similar scenarios.
1. Set Up Two-Factor Authentication 🔐
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is one of the simplest ways to add an extra layer of protection to your online accounts. With 2FA, even if someone gets ahold of your password, they won’t be able to access your account without a secondary code that’s sent to your phone or email.
While this feature might be annoying to some for the extra step it takes to access your account, it’s especially important for social media, where your business or personal brand may have a significant presence. That additional security code will make it much harder for hackers to break in, keeping your account safe.
2. Change Your Passwords Every Three Months 🔄
Passwords can be a weak link in your online security if you don’t manage them carefully. One of the best ways to safeguard yourself and your business is by changing your passwords regularly— ideally every three months.
Avoid using easily guessable information like your birthday, pet names, or email addresses. Instead, opt for a unique phrase or statement that’s personal, but hard to crack, like a line from your favorite book or a combination of words that only you understand.
3. Protect Your Personal Information 🛡️
As tempting as it may be to make yourself highly accessible, especially as a business owner, posting your personal information online can make you a target. Hackers often exploit details like phone numbers or addresses to gain unauthorized access to your accounts.
Instead of posting this information, consider alternative ways to be reachable. For example, use a registered agent for business contacts or set up a Google phone number. These methods make sure you can still communicate with customers– without exposing your personal details.
Bonus Tip: Build Your Email List
One of the most valuable assets you can have as a business owner? An email list. This is because even if your social media accounts were compromised or went down, you still have a direct line of communication with your audience– so no matter what happens online, you’ll still have access to your inner circle to keep your business running smoothly.
